The Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is set to host a free family concert and community resource fair on Sunday, April 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Caesar Chavez High School in Delano. This event is made possible through the KDA Creative Corps Grant, which has enabled BSO to support the arts in rural communities while working collaboratively with other sectors.

The concert will be an opportunity for many first time attendees to enjoy live music. Delano is a city located 31 miles north-northwest of Bakersfield and falls into the California Healthy Places Index with an HPI Score (3.0): 12.6 percentile. The concert is designed to provide social support and stress relief to those in attendance and help close the opportunity gap of exposure to the arts in rural communities.

The BSO event will combine education, entertainment and interactivity to promote health through culture and art. Kern Health Systems partnered with BSO to host a free onsite pre-concert event for the community. The event will include hands-on activities and workshops to inspire creativity and curiosity. Children will be able to explore the wonders of music in a fun and engaging way by creating musical instruments and composing melodies.

Under the direction of conductor Stilian Kirov, the BSO musicians will perform “The Conductor’s Spellbook” by Paul Dooley. The story follows Tony Stradivarius, who discovers a book of spells during a field trip to the symphony that allows him to take control of the orchestra. The concert will transport families to magical realms through the power of music, captivating an audience of all ages.
