Weekly drum classes bring communities together
Donte McDaniel is the Lead Drummer and Manager of African Drum Interactive, LLC. This initiative is dedicated to spreading joy, unity, and the rich heritage of African drumming to communities in Fresno. Thanks to the support from the KDA Creative Corps grant, McDaniel and his team were able to offer 20 free African Drum classes, which aimed to preserve the cultural significance of African drumming.
The classes catered to beginners in communities from the lowest quartile of the Healthy Place Index and featured group drumming, live performances, and tailored programming. African Drum Interactive’s mission is to kindle a sense of connection and celebration through the rhythmic beats of the drum, welcoming individuals of all ages and backgrounds to immerse themselves in the infectious rhythm and spirit of Africa. Through workshops, performances, and educational programs, this initiative fosters cultural understanding and appreciation, while promoting the universal language of music.
McDaniel organizes events and classes to create a space for cultural exchange and education. Its goal is to preserve cultural heritage and inspire a new generation to embrace it by allowing people to learn about the traditions and history behind African drumming.

His efforts have had a significant impact on children’s education, providing many with the opportunity to enhance their cognitive abilities through music. These classes serve as a platform where individuals can develop musical skills, break down cultural barriers, and promote understanding among people from diverse backgrounds.
Students learn about the history and cultural significance of African drumming and delve into the fundamentals of rhythm and percussion technique. Donte leads participants through exercises designed to improve their sense of timing, coordination, and improvisation, helping them unlock their innate musical potential and find their own unique voice on the drum.
Donte’s classes offer a platform for personal growth and self-expression. By fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, he empowers students to step out of their comfort zones, take creative risks, and embrace their individuality.
