KDACC Empowers Amber Patee Adams to Ignite a Cultural Renaissance in Central California

Amber Patee Adams, an advocate for the transformative power of the arts, is spearheading the Demi Dance program in underserved communities, fueled by a $135,000 grant from KDACC.

A free, 8-week program, the Demi Dance Project offers dance classes that are taught through storytelling to qualified children, ages 3-8, regardless of their family’s socioeconomic status. Each class meets 1x per week for 50 minutes.

Demi Dance distinguishes itself with a curriculum designed to celebrate diversity and inclusion. By introducing characters from different corners of the world, Adams ensures that children not only learn dance but also appreciate the rich diversity of cultures found in Central California.

The program’s sessions, both in-person and online, provide an inclusive space for children to explore dance, with lessons available in English and Spanish on YouTube.

The characters in her curriculum represent diverse emotions and states of being and foster an inclusive environment. Amber’s advocacy has particularly resonated with immigrant families, instigating a positive shift in rhetoric while honoring their unique cultural backgrounds.

Amber emphasizes the profound intersectionality between arts, science and social issues. Demi Dance contributes to a culturally vibrant California by seamlessly integrating multiculturalism into dance education. In doing so, children not only learn the art form but also develop a profound appreciation for diversity.

Amidst the devastating closures of the performing arts during the pandemic, Amber saw an opportunity to assist growth by partnering with local dance studios, like the King’s Cultural Center in Kings County, Dat Krew Academy and Pinpoint Dance Academy in Kern County. Through the multi-county partnerships, Demi Dance aims to not only provide a new learning experience within the dance studios but to also empower local artists and dance teachers through job opportunities.

Despite initial hurdles, such as skepticism from studio owners and transportation challenges for disadvantaged families, Amber’s dedication remains unyielding. The KDACC grant serves as a lifeline, enabling Demi Dance to overcome obstacles, create job opportunities and expand its reach. Moving into 2024 at full force, Amber plans to amplify efforts, ensuring the program continues to break down barriers and enrich lives.
